New Cooking Blog - Sensible Bean!

My partner Gabrielle and I have been working on a cooking blog, and we are happy to finally unveil it to the world! The blog is called “Sensible Bean”, and can be accessed here:

Gabrielle is the mastermind behind the recipes and photography, while I took care of setting up the infrastructure that makes the website work. It has been very fun to find a project where we both could put our skills and interests to use. To be honest, we have no idea what’s in store for us with this blog - we’re just doing this for fun.

Vous souvenez-vous de cet album Italien qui a gagné le prestigieux prix de l’album musical de l’année de felixleger.com? Il s’agissait de Sadako e le mille gru di carta, du groupe LogoS. Eh bien, je ne mentais pas: j’ai vraiment eu un coup de coeur pour cet album.

Le coup de foudre était tel que j’ai décidé d’en acheter la version vinyle limitée afin d’encourager le groupe.

Or, au moment de passer la commande, une erreur se glissa dans mon adresse: le numéro civique n’était pas indiqué! Quelques jours plus tard, m’apercevant de mon erreur, je décidai donc de contacter le groupe par courriel afin de les mettre au courant. Hélas, misère, ils venaient tout juste de compléter l’envoi du colis. Ainsi, au bureau de poste, il est impossible de le recevoir à son arrivée. Comble de malheur, le code de suivi n’existe pas pour ce colis. La seule chose qu’il reste à faire est d’attendre son renvoi en Italie afin qu’ils corrigent mon adresse pour l’envoyer de nouveau.

In 2003, I was already ahead of the social media curve. Yes, I had my own personal web page (thanks, dad)!

As it currently stands, it is mostly a list of broken links to video game websites and Flash movies/games. It is a nice little time capsule of the things that mattered most to me when I was 10 years old. Time flies, and our analog minds cannot remember everything… Long live digital media!

Freedom

There’s a weight on my shoulders, the crushing pressure of being being a beacon of usefulness to society. More and more, I realize that this objective is both unattainable and unhealthy.

When I started this blog, my objective was twofold:

Share information that people with similar interests could use
Have a portfolio that demonstrates my ability at sharing knowledge

As you might guess, while it can be healthy to focus on #1, adding #2 can quickly become unhealthy. I am interested in a multitude of things, but I also have many fears that prevents me from sharing them. Indeed, what will people think if:

Good news, everyone! Comments are now enabled on the blog. I’m currently using Disqus, as it is the easiest one to install in Hugo websites by default.

If you are curious how I managed to add the comment sections, here’s how:

Create an account at disqus.com
Create a website short name here
In your Hugo config.toml, add disqusShortname = "your-shortname"

I Have a Blog... Now What?

While owning a blog on the web certainly is cool, what one does with it is that truly matters. Because it took me so long to finally have my own website, my mind is filled with ideas I am finally able to tackle. I am an expert in almost none of these topics. My goal is not to be the ultimate source of knowledge on the web. Rather, knowing that maybe I’ll catch just one person’s interest in the process is all the motivation I need!

Now I know what you’re thinking… This blog post isn’t very impressive looking. Well, I’m still quite proud of it! This is my first blog post using Hugo, a static website generator. In the past, I would have used more common blogging tools, such as the ubiquitous “blogger”, or “wordpress”. The thing you have to know about me, however, is that I really enjoy customization. Some might (rightfully) call me a hipster in certain situations. I’m very excited to see what I will be able to achieve with this blog!
