Introducing WPM: A Literary Typing Test That Makes Practice Meaningful

Here’s a little app I “vibe coded” a couple days ago. WPM stands for Words Per Minute and its goal is to provide metrics for your progress in learning how to type faster. It’s a typing test aimed at improving your speed when writing on a keyboard.
I’ve always been a fan of this type of application, and many good ones already exist (TypeQuicker, AOEU, MonkeyType, ZType, etc.). I was curious to know what “my” app would look and feel like if I ever decided to create one, and what spin I would be able to give mine so it stands apart.
Well, I have finally managed to answer this question. Instead of typing random 5-7 letter words, the words used by the app are quotes from books I’ve personally read and found valuable. Thus, when I use this app, as I learn how to type faster, I also review important insights I might have encountered months ago but needed to revisit.
The Problem with Traditional Typing Tests
Most typing tests are boring. You’re asked to type random sentences like “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” or meaningless paragraphs that offer no value beyond mechanical repetition. While these exercises might improve your typing speed, they’re about as engaging as watching paint dry.
What if typing practice could be more than just finger gymnastics? What if every keystroke could introduce you to profound ideas, timeless wisdom, and transformative insights?
Enter WPM: Where Typing Meets Learning
WPM is a typing test that transforms mundane practice into an intellectual adventure. Instead of meaningless text, you’ll type carefully curated quotes from some of the world’s most influential books.
Key Features

The Learning Philosophy Behind WPM
WPM isn’t just another typing test—it’s built on fundamental principles about how learning should work:
Meaningful Content Creates Engagement: Traditional typing tests treat words as mere symbols. But when you type profound quotes from Marcus Aurelius or practical insights from Cal Newport, you’re internalizing wisdom while building muscle memory.
Micro-Learning Compounds: Each quote is a 30-60 second micro-lesson. Over time, these small encounters with valuable ideas compound into significant knowledge.
Safe Practice Reduces Anxiety: The real-time feedback system (green for correct, red for mistakes) provides guidance without judgment. Mistakes become stepping stones, not failures to fear.
Curated Content Matters: Every quote comes from books I’ve personally read and found valuable. In a world flooded with information, thoughtful curation becomes essential.
Progress Should Be Visible: WPM’s tracking creates a record of your intellectual journey—not just typing speed, but the wisdom you’ve internalized.
Learning Should Be Joyful: The confetti animations and sense of progress aren’t just gamification—they acknowledge that learning is inherently rewarding when done right.
